-FUTURE OF WORK-

ARE WE HEADING FOR A
JOBLESS FUTURE?

How often do you think about the future? It is estimated that by the year of 2030 and beyond, we may see the removal of up to 800 million jobs that humans now hold. The future prognostication of the loss of human jobs is due to the rapid influx of artificial intelligence and what is known as “machine learning” that has already started to infiltrate the workforce. Could it be true that many of us are facing a jobless future?

THE EVER EVOLVING WORLD OF WORK

When this takeover comes (if the prediction proves true), how will you keep your livelihood when so many jobs may be replaced by AI machines and robots? It’s time to start thinking about this scenario, and perhaps the best thing all of us can do is to assume it will happen, even if it never does.

While it’s true that only a small percentage of the worries that people have come to pass, anything involving computer technology and automation is likely to be accurate since it is changing so rapidly. It has been said that “the best predictor of the future is the present.” Based on this idea, we can see how this takeover could happen given the rapid pace that AI and machine learning is improving and is already being used within the workforce of today on a limited scale.

“Technology is moving at an incredible pace”

THE AREAS OF CONCERN

Machines can be trained to do some different tasks. We have provided a list of some of the areas of work and industry tasks that AI is the most efficient with. But the list is endless and can include a wide variety of other jobs as well. Anything that can be copied or repeated can be done by a machine and automated.

Construction and building
Manufacturing jobs
Delivery, transportation, and installation of goods and services
Customer service
Ordering and sales
Redesign of 3D printing jobs and computerized design

The jobs above are just an example of the types of tasks that can be done by machines and will be turned over entirely to computers shortly. It is not an exhaustive list, however, so we should all think about whether what we do can be replaced in the future when all of these things are turned over to an automated process.

THE NEED FOR HUMANS IN THE FUTURE OF WORK

It’s impossible to know what changes may be in place by 2030, but it’s a good idea to try. Most estimates include fully autonomous vehicles on every road, drones delivering goods everywhere, and artificial intelligence featuring in all aspects of our lives.

People are more valuable than machines. We have the capability of consciousness, morality, and abstract thought that machines will never have. No matter how good robots get or how convenient automation is to business, they will never get past the basic truth that people need people.

The problem is how to stay relevant in a future that many believe will include huge disruption and constant change.

CHECKMATE…

The above video shows some of the technology that is already being used. The video shows an interesting aspect of AI, that it started with a study of the game of chess.

An important point that the video also reveals is that AI is “always moving” and that it is predictive. This is what is valuable to business owners, science, and other industries.

As time goes one, it can “learn” from its mistakes and create more complex strategies for problem-solving. This is as close as AI gets too abstract thought, but it does not have the moral, ethical, or emotive patterns of thought that humans have, that allow us to take circumstances and other factors into account when making choices.

LEANING TOWARDS PEOPLE SKILLS

As we learn more about the trends of technology and how artificial intelligence will infiltrate into the job market, we need to have a plan as to how to battle the threat of a jobless future. While the power of the AI invasion is more in our hands than we know, even business owners feel pressured to let in more automatic processes and replace humans with much faster machines and AI robot technology.

Jay Tuck, in his “Ted Talk” about the future takeover of AI machines, called them, “cold, cold lions” that will take over our world if we let them. In the video, he also explores how AI has allowed us to see the topography of any location in the world and track people all over the planet.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT MAKES HUMANS UNIQUE

To stay current and avoid getting replaced, we need to recreate ourselves. Creative jobs that use the affective domain such as thinking, feeling, and sensing can robot-proof our careers.

Why?

Because the one thing that separates us from machines is our ability to use the affective, emotional, and creative brain.

Only humans can make a human connection to another person, reach out to someone in need, listen with an empathetic ear, and create something completely original.

“Train yourself to become more flexible”

BEING FLEXIBLE AND QUICK TO ADAPT

Perhaps you are already in a creative type job. If so, that’s great. Some of the best types of creative jobs are listed below. If you are involved in any of these types of careers, you may be harder to replace. If you are not currently doing any of these things, you may want to think about how the tasks that you do day to day and whether they could be automated.

Writing original books, using original ideas or concepts

Counseling, advocacy, and humanities positions

Painting, art, and music

Creating business plans, consulting

Creative sales

MANAGING THE AUTOMATION

You will hear in the future of AI machines even being able to paint or write books. But just because it can “create” these works does not mean that they will be valuable. Human beings only value art, music, and books because they are written by other humans.

They want to know that others feel, think, and go through similar experiences.

AVOID A JOBLESS FUTURE AND
BECOME UNREPLACEABLE

So focus on the creative skills and natural talents that you have and ask yourself, “Can I do this better than a robot?”

If a robot can be trained to do it, you may find them competing for your positions in the future.

It’s never too early to start preparing for the future.
