-FUTURE OF WORK-

PREPARE FOR TOMORROW’S WORKPLACE TODAY

Are you worried about the future of work? Artificial intelligence has the world gripped. It is the subject of coffee club debates, roundtable discussions, and online social media groups from every walk of life. Scientists, investors, and consumers alike are both fascinated and perplexed with the capabilities of this new technology that threatens to overstep its boundaries.

THE EVER EVOLVING WORLD OF WORK

AI is everywhere in today’s world and is growing in power at an exponential rate. We have already seen jobs being replaced by automation and smart algorithms but we are only at the very beginning of this journey. It is believed that, by the year 2030 or beyond, 800 million jobs could be at risk. You may wonder how a robot or AI software could take your job.

Whether you believe it or not, it is very likely a possibility.

THE DOUBLE EDGE SWORD OF TECHNOLOGY

Whether or not we will be able to keep the AI invasion at bay permanently remains to be seen. But, to be on the safe side, we should plan for that possibility and adjust our lives accordingly. Are you a creative person? If so, that’s great because it’s one area that robots aren’t overachieving in. There are a number of different skills that have been identified as being important when preparing for tomorrow.

Some of the most important ones are listed below:

SENSE MAKING

Sense-making is a specific skill that allows you to determine the deeper meaning or the significance of events. This is a highly cognitive “thinking skill” that requires a human being to achieve. Robots can calculate and compute, but they are unable to rationalize based on human experience truly. They can only emulate it.

“Become a super learner”

SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE

Social intelligence is related to what psychologists call, “emotional intelligence.” It requires the ability to make a truly human connection to other humans through facial expressions, touch, and interaction. It is a basic human need that robots cannot fulfill, even though MIT is attempted to copy this aspect with a new robot technology that tries to mimic the process.

NOVAL & ADAPTIVE THINKING

Having the ability to think “outside the box” in the real world is what this category of skills is about. Novel and adaptive thinking means original ideas, concepts, and creations that include components of abstract thought and applications that go beyond the rote memory of AI computers from big data.

CROSS CULTURAL COMPETENCY

The ability to work, socialize, and adapt to a different culture is also a skill that is inherently human. Robots have no understanding of culture unless this is programmed into their “intelligence” algorithms, so they are not able to adapt or act differently when placed in a new setting as humans are.

COMPUTATIONAL THINKING

The title of this category of skills might make you think that it is a skill set that belongs to computers. But people are better at these skill types than computers. It involves the ability to take a data system like that which exists on computers and turn it into a rational, abstract analysis that people understand. Examples might include applying the use of a computerized language or program to teach others to program or apply ideas to a world problem.

“Train yourself to become more flexible”

NEW MEDIA LITERACY

New media literacy is at the intersection of AI technology and human beings. The skills that new media involve include understanding the language of AI computers and programs and being able to develop new content that the new media of AI machines understand.

If you learn this skill set, you may be able to stay relevant and robot-proof yourself in the AI storm. If you are already working with digital media, it won’t be a big stretch to use the new media tools that are on the horizon.

TRANSDISCIPLIARITY

If you are good with literacy or have high verbal skills, you may want to consider the transdisciplinary skills that allow you to understand and communicate meaning across a wide variety of subject areas. Teachers and others well-versed in literacy and comprehension of verbal language across the disciplines may want to consider this field.

DESIGN MINDSET

This field is relatively new in the real world, but it is based on solid psychological principles that can be applied in the work environment.

An example might be to understand why higher ceilings promote more open ideas and to adjust the work environment to create this illusion.

COGNITIVE-LOAD MANAGEMENT

With so much big data in the world today, we need to be able to sift it through some internal filters and decide what is the most important.

This will become increasingly important as the world’s expansive database becomes larger and larger.

VIRTUAL COLLABORATION

The world has come together in many different ways. The ability to collaborate with others all over the world to design, create, or discuss important projects will become more important in the future than ever. (Source:iftf.org)

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DOES HAVE LIMITS

The statistics that show the takeover regarding AI and the future job market are alarming. There’s no doubt that the world will be far more technology-based in the future than we could have ever imagined. But since we know this is down the road, the thing to do now is to prepare. Think creatively about how your current career or a new career could launch you into the future in a big way and AI-proof your livelihood.

Plan for tomorrow today. Learn a new creative skill set. You’ll be glad you did.
